In most cases I remove tattoos with a Q-switch YAG laser. It has proven to be the most effective laser in removing tattoos. Tattoo removal with lasers does require multiple treatments spaced a month or two apart in order to allow the treated area to heal completely before subsequent treatments. It has been my experience that laser removal will give the best overall result, and in most cases, will leave little or no residual tattoo or scarring. In certain cases, however, the patient may elect a surgical procedure wherein the tattoo is excised and the wound is closed with sutures.
This is a 19 year old young man who had tattooed his eyelids in his wild youth. When he tried to enlist for the Army he was told he would not be able to join until the tattoos were removed. He came to my office to see about having them treated with the laser. When I explained that multiple treatments are required for any tattoo removal he did not wish to wait for approximately one year in order to do multiple treatments, so he elected to have surgical excision. This procedure was essentially an upper lid blepharoplasty.
The after photo was taken ten days after the procedure. He got an excellent result and was very happy and left to join the Army. He is now stationed in Iraq.
This young woman was treated as a patient through my Tattoo Removal for Youth Foundation Her original tattoo of a Tazmanian Devil was a work of art with black, blue, red, yellow, orange and green ink. Red and green inks are the two most difficult colors to remove and require a different laser and wave length for penetration. She was treated a total of 15 times in order to remove all the colors. She got an excellent result and there is virtually no evidence that she ever had a tattoo at all.
